Week 2

Art Gallery

The bus let out a short sharp hiss, my forehead bulging with sweat, my stomach whirling around and around like the bus’s worn out wheels, it was a nice peaceful day as the birds chirped their unique and repetitive song as they flew in the sunny warm breeze, as the bus stormed along the rackety and uneven road the whole bus was filled with excitement and laughter, all except for me, I was on my way with my classroom to the Art Gallery, I was so despondent and blue because I kept receiving all these gloomy and scary thoughts like “what if I get left behind?” Or “what if I walk too slowly and lose my group?”  These thoughts kept flowing into my head, and even worse all the way on the bus to the Art Gallery my neighbour piled sentence after sentence of her long yet boring story onto me, when the bus let out another short sharp hiss to signal that we had stopped, I suddenly jerked up my head and found that half of my classroom had already vanished outside and were gathering into their groups , I jumped up and shuffled to the door as it took for what felt like forever for the rest of my class to make their way to the end of the long spooky corridor-like bus, when I finally managed to escape the drought of air and freshness I peered around the gigantic crowd of students and adults to see if I could find my group of kids, I then finally saw a bright pink ragged jacket jumping up and down, I was sure that one of the kids in my group had a bright pink ragged jacket so I ran over to them and we waited and waited and waited and you guessed, waited, for what felt like forever (but it was probably only five minutes) until finally the grand glass doors that separated me and my class from the almighty art gallery slowly drifted open, as the mighty doors slowly opened I heard the most horrible noise that nearly split my ears apart, it was the doors creaking because of their rusty and old aged hinges, when the creaking finally stopped me and my classroom submerged into a line so long that the kids at the back had to step into the gorgeous and merry garden, when everybody had managed to get through the door me and my group started walking upstairs to a exquisite room that made me feel like I was in one of a castles dreary yet colour-filled room, in the cosy and charming room filled with several paintings of many different kinds of textures and colour there was one painting that appealed to me more than any other painting in that room, I stood right in front of the painting and stayed rooted to my spot while I looked at the weird yet intriguing painting full of delicate and pulchritudinous farms  and peaceful people living their daily lives on the farm, when me and my group found our way to the next room we all stopped and glared at a humongous canvas, but with only a tiny little pin in the centre of it, all of my group were overwhelmed about this piece of art, we thought of every single possibility of what the art could be but nobody could apprehend of what it could be until one small pretty little girl who was wearing maroon coloured long pants and a ocean blue coat said “I know!, the shadow of the pin looks like a bee!” Then it was madness, all the kids pushed and shoved each other to get one glimpse of the pin until my group of kid’s parent helper said “enough!” Then all went deadly silent, the parent helper was so astounded at the expeditious change of volume that she staggered her way to the next room, when we arrived at the next room we found that the walls were painted several different colours there was yellow, blue, red, green and even orange! And they all played a different part of keeping the wall nice and filled with colour and enjoyment, then we found a window that led out to a humongous building, I was pretty sure it was a voting/election type of building but when I took a closer look I saw an amazing water feature that went down the middle of the pathway to the doors, there was a Maori tiki pole (sorry I can't remember what they're called) that was being surround by a flowing river, and it was so gorgeous that my whole group all made a separate comment that made out that the water feature actually represented some sort of welcoming, when we made our way out of the room my group parent said “that's it everybody,” what! It can’t be over I said, but the parent helper just said to everybody “let’s go guys let’s meet back at the downstairs sitting area with the others” so off I gloomily trotted down the stunning marble stairs and then plonked myself on the floor and ate my morning tea, I thought that the trip was going to be WAY longer and I wish that I could write a bit more on my astounding trip to the art gallery but that was it so thank you for reading my trip to the art gallery!

Capturing The Heart Of Waimairi School

Throughout the term me and my class have been working on how to capture the heart of Waimairi School, to do this we thought of places around the school that made Waimairi School the great school it is today, we thought of many different ways to capture a moment in time that captured the heart of Waimairi school, we thought that taking photos of the places and people that make Waimairi School a great place to go to was a great idea so we all set off on our own and took multiple photos of what we though was the heart of Waimairi School, some people took photos of the Esol building, some people took photos of children working hard in their classrooms, but I decided to take photos of kids playing on the field, these are the photos I took.

I chose to take photos of this because I think that the field gives everybody happiness because it lets you have a whole lot of fun and laughter on it, I also chose this because I think that the field is the best place to have fun on.
Week 6

Calendar Art

This week I made my calendar art, I made it by cutting out strips of coloured paper and then glueing them sideways on a piece of paper, to do this I had to be certain that I had the correct amount of strips on the piece of paper because if I didn’t then I would have to either spend even more time making another smaller strip or cutting off the big strip, also I used my thinker key competency and I thought of a way to make the person that is looking at my calendar art more intrigued by it and more fascinated and not them seeing it and saying “oh, just another boring piece of paper” by introducing a more colourful addition to my calendar art, I did this by cutting out different colour hearts and then glueing them onto the piece of paper, I had to apply a lot of carefulness to this because I had to make sure I made a certain amount of space between the hearts.

Dance And Music

During term 3 me and my class have split up into groups to go to dance or drama or music, I went to dance and music, for dance we had to create a dance including three different types of popular dances in a group of two/three, for music we had to search the classroom for materials or objects that we could us to make a sound or rhythm with a group of five/six.

Hide And Seek Experience

We sprinted our way to the back of the classroom, as we heavily breathed while searching for a remotely good place to hide, I had a little light bulb switch on inside my brain, I said “we could hide in the bush!” And then I hit myself on the head and said “darn it I accidentally gave out my hiding place to all the other people!” But yet I still crawled into the dark and dirty bush. When I found my way to the back of the bush I suddenly realised that I was surrounded by the prickly branches, ready to pounce and scratch me for their personal satisfaction. As I cut out the image of me getting cut and screaming and then getting found and then making a fool of myself in front of my whole classroom (I do admit there is a bit of exaggeration there) I listened to the eerie silence that surrounded me and I thought to myself “Why not peek above the bush, it won’t cause any harm.” So as my mind and gut finished one of their many arguments I popped my head through the little gap in the bush. As I was searching for anybody who looked like my seekers I suddenly felt a rustling sound beside me, then I screamed “Ahhhhhhh! what is that!” And then a little voice harshly whispered “Shoosh it’s just me.” As my brain calmed down and became aware that the strange figure crawling through the bush was just one of my classmates I resumed my observing and glaring out of the bush, I sighed and said to my classmate “why did you sneak up on me! You could of gotten us found!” And then my classmate shrugged (as usual) and said “sorry I didn’t think you’d be such a baby” and then, well let’s just say there was a lot of “You’re so annoying!” And “Go away!” And all kinds of the kind of things that your typical angry classmates say to each other when they’re really mad,  by the end of the quarrel we made peace (I said I’d give him one of my chocolate chip cookies at lunchtime and he happily agreed) and then we started taking turns peering above the bush and making sure we were clear. Then, just as we were about to die of boredom, the three short whistles that indicated that everybody needed to come out of their hiding spot and to come down to the concrete floor shrieked its special yet horribly loud tune, so me and my partner walked out of our hiding spot and marched proudly to the concrete floor, then we realised that we weren’t the last ones to be found! There was actually a girl who didn’t hear the whistle and didn’t come out of her hiding spot! As I roared with rage (inside my head of course) the seekers found the last person and everybody congratulated the last person, so from what I’ve learnt from this story, never be the first one to believe that a game of hide and seek has ended (because I’m pretty sure my game of hide and seek was rigged/unfair)

Sculpture Reflection

Arts sculpture reflection

This is my reflection of my time creating a found object piece of art so I hope you like it!

I created a robot made out of tin cans, yoghurt pottles, cardboard, and finally popsicle sticks, one struggle for me was putting lots of time and effort in, this is because I spent too much time writing my plan and see think wonder ending in a result of me not being able to complete this project as fast as I'd liked to, also this is a picture of what my project ended up looking like.

My inspiration is the photo below this paragraph, I had to make my robot look a bit different because of the supply shortage, this teaches me that you need adapt to a new plan so if you make a mistake you can quickly solve the mistake and move on so time management won't be a problem.

Something that went well was my quality level, this is because I think I really stepped up in this project and showed my teachers how quality I can make my work because I worked hard and had little time mucking around, another thing that went well was my focusing challenge, at the start of the project making stage I challenged myself by saying that I would not get distracted by anybody, I completed the challenge and I think I've really stepped up a level on focusing and concentrating on the task, this is very good because it means I've learnt to concentrate well and not get distracted when I need to focus.

Next time I do an activity similar to this I want to change my time management because I didn't make as much progress as I wanted to so  that means I need to concentrate on my time management key competency, one more thing that I would like to change for the next time I do this activity is to work with somebody new, I am saying this because it's great to make new friends and learn new things about your partner and also it's great to just have a change!

Shopping Disasters

Don't you hate it when your mum says she needs to “pop” into the mall? So do I. Every single time my family is in a car we go to the mall, it's either for shopping, afternoon tea or dinner, or maybe even to look at bras for half an hour for my mum. And don't you just hate it when your mum bumps into a friend or maybe even a person she doesn't even know and has a long yet boring talk for half an hour in the supermarket while you’re standing there freezing to death because they decided to have a conversation beside the frozen food?!

Well then I have a story to tell you today! On a cold wet day in July, Zeb (my brother) my mum, and myself were in the palms mall looking at clothing in the shop Bras N Things. My brother was about three and I had just turned five.  My mum was quite obviously going to look at clothing and bras for half an hour and then decide not to buy anything as usual so I sat down on a wee plastic chair and, you guessed the chair snapped and I fell on the floor on my butt.  As I was only five it was VERY painful so I quickly pulled my pants down the tiniest bit to check if I had bruised it and, you guessed again, my pants slipped out of my hand and fell to the floor and I thought to myself “why did I decide to wear Thomas the tank engine undies today? I felt so awkward my cheeks went such a bright shade of red I looked like Elmo’s cousin.

I pulled my pants up very quickly and ran over to my mum, surprise surprise she was having a looooooong conversation with the shop assistant. I got so bored that when I got to the bras I started squeezing them, then when I looked around to see if there was anything else to do I saw a woman staring at me as if she had just seen a ghost…

I very awkwardly strolled back to my mum with tomato red cheeks. She was still talking (no surprises there) - I looked around and spotted a lolly shop just outside in the mall, so I sneaked away from my mum very slowly and when I was sure she wasn't watching I ran to the shop and looked at all the lollies. Then, I saw the yummiest thing I've ever seen, a HUGE pack of gummy bears just waiting to be eaten, so I grabbed the pack very quickly and looked around to check if there was anybody looking and then I opened the pack and took a whole handful and stuffed them all in my mouth then I closed the pack and put it back.

I then sprinted back to the shop that my mum was in but while I was sprinting an old man got in my way and I ran straight into him, the man took a long cold stare at me as if he was locking onto a target like ironman. By the time he  stopped looking at me my face was ghostly white, I was so scared I almost peed my pants and I felt so awkward I shuffled the rest of the way back to the shop as if I was a penguin.

I finally arrived at the shop and went up to my mum and hugged her, and then realised that the person I was hugging wasn’t actually my mum, it was a woman who had the exact same coat on as my mum, so I  awkwardly fake-smiled and then hid behind a rack of t-shirts, then when I saw my actual mum pass by looking a bit worried I jumped out and hugged her, then she quickly wriggled out because she saw the lolly shop lady furiously running towards us. Honestly, I thought my Mum was going to have a talk to the lady (did I mention that's her specialty by the way?!), but instead she scooped up my little brother and shouted RUN!, anyway, that was only one of my experiences and miserable humiliations at the mall.

P.S never go to the mall without putting on plain white undies.

Science Blog

Science Blog 19.6.17 Week 8
Introduction:What is force?

Push: A push is a force, so say when you throw an apple at a cup they both push from each other making neither of them move.

Pull: Pull is a force where you need to pull an object to make it move, you are always using the force called pull, you pull open a drawer, you pull the rope in tug of war, there are so many ways that you can use the force pull that it would take a decade to write them all down.

Acceleration: Acceleration is where you make an object go faster by pushing or pulling, such as when you have a toy car, you push it to accelerate to make it go fast.

This session me and my partner Alex were gathering, collecting, and observing data on what happened if we added two cotton balls to one cotton ball, what happened was it went very high but very short, this is because if an object weighs more it will come down faster, if an object is lighter, and it is very hard to predict how far the cotton ball will go, the opposite of weighing a lot is when the object is lighter, but when it's a light cotton ball it is more likely to go very short and it doesn't even come close to going high.

A variable was me and Alex kept changing the weight, every time we flung the cotton ball it would either go further or shorter because of the weight difference, also every time we flung it (we flung the cotton ball eleven times) we placed another rubber band around the three cotton balls, we started with no rubber bands, put one rubber band around it after, then we flung it again, then we put another rubber band around it and so on.

I can use this new knowledge for the future because when I go to intermediate I will know what a force is/what forces do, and most importantly I will know how a force works. Also I can use this new learning by knowing facts and how a force works for the next time I do an activity similar to this one/our new task making a balloon powered vehicle, a game using force/forces, and a model playground using force, I chose the balloon powered boat, so I can also use this new learning for that as well because it would help me to complete the section “how does it use force?” and i would be able to describe the forces in detail.

I wonder what would happen if I were to place more than ten rubber bands around the three cotton balls, would it go far or short?

This activity uses force because when you bend the spoon down to launch the cotton balls you are actually pulling the spoon back, also the spoon uses the push force because when it launches the spoon pushes the cotton ball and makes the cotton ball launch.

Also here are some photos of my catapult.

This is my catapult before I made a change to it, I took both of the extra parts at the back off because I think they disturbed the balance between the catapult and the parts meaning that the cotton ball would not go as far.

Here is the catapult after I took the parts off, it worked better than before, I think that is because there is less weight put on the catapult therefore the catapult is able to fling easier without having more weight on it and making the cotton ball gradually come down faster when you fling it.

Science Blog 12.6.17 Week 7

What I've done: I did the catapult this week,we were gathering and collecting data about how far the cotton ball would go, the first time we would put no rubber bands on the cotton ball and then the second time you put one rubber band on it and so on.

What I found out: I thought that if you put more rubber bands on the cotton ball, the cotton ball would go further, but when I started putting 6 and then 7 rubber bands on, the cotton ball seemed to go really high but short, but when I started getting into 4 and then 5 it started going really long and short, I think the gravitation pulls the cotton ball hard when the cotton ball has more weight on it and it goes really high it’s like a life sized catapult shooting a cannon ball it would go high but very short because of the gravitational pull.

What I wonder:I wonder if gravitation is all about weight and the gravitation pulls harder when the object that is being shot weighs more.

Science Blog 7.6.17 Week 6

What I've done: I did ping pong ramp, ping pong ramp is where you make a ramp out of resources like books and highlighters.

What I found out: I found out that if you put the ruler lower to the ground the marble would go longer but lower and when you put the ruler up high the marble goes higher but shorter.

What I wonder: I wonder if the marble would go really long if we put a ramp in front of the ruler or would it just go higher?

 Science Blog 31.5.17 Week 5

What I've done:I did the rocket balloon, rocket balloons is when  you have a straw and a piece of string and a balloon, first of all you blow up the balloon untill it's about halfway to its full size then you tape the end of the balloon to the straw. then you put the straw in the string and you take the string and put it on either side of a wall. next you pull the straw to one end of the striNg, and then you untangle the knot on the balloon and it goes up!

What I found out: I found out that if you blow the balloon bigger it will go longer but it won't blow for as long for some reason. Also I found out that if the string is higher the balloon will go fast but stop quickly.
What I wonder: I wonder if the balloon was small would it go far or short?

Science Blog 25.5.17

What I did: I did the basketball bounce, I was mostly examining the way that the ball pushes off the ground harder when you throw it on the ground harder and then the other way round if you throw the ball lightly.

What I found out: I found out that there was pressurised air inside the ball and that was the whole reason the ball came back up when you bounced it because the pressurised air inside the ball makes it bouncy.

What I wonder: what would happen if there was no pressurised air inside the basketball, would it still bounce or would it not?

High Ropes

                     High ropes
I felt nervous, I was clutching my stomach as I peered above me I stared at the distance between the ground and the ropes, I gulped if I ever went through this without being scared I would be amazed.

It was a sort of drowsy/ bright day but I was too scared to even notice what the weather was like, I was listening very carefully to the instructor when he said “if the people that are working with the rope make one mistake you could die! Well, he didn't say that exactly but it was something like that” Anyway I looked at the person next to me I said “well that's reassuring” and he laughed like someone had just emptied a bottle of laughing gas.

Then we started gearing up,when my group was ready, I said “why don't you guys go first? they just nodded.

When all of my group had had a turn and I was run dry with excuses, I said to myself “why not give it a go maybe you'll like it?” so with that final pep talk inside my head I unbuckled myself from the two belayer buckles and buckled myself into the buckle for the climbing rope.

Then I climbed and I didn't care how far I got all that mattered at that moment was that I had had a go and that was what made me happy for the rest of the day.
